Modern Odyssey: A Mythical Journey at the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show

A Unique Installation Experience Inspired by Ancient Greek Mythology

The concept of Modern Odyssey was born out of a deep exploration of cultural beliefs that have influenced past jewellery designs. Ancient Greek mythology, with its complex characters and rich symbolism, proved to be the perfect inspiration for this project. Rather than directly depicting the Greek deities, the installations used allegories as clues, creating unique spaces dedicated to each central character, such as Zeus, Poseidon, Hera, Apollo, Artemis, and Athena.

The challenge of the project was not only to create visually stunning installations but also to ensure a seamless onsite setup within a tight three-day timeframe. To achieve this, a lightweight metallic framed structure was used for the walls and columns, which were then clad with translucent graphic mesh and backlit. Bespoke props, lighting, LED elements, and ambient soundtracks were carefully integrated to bring the allegorical installations to life.

The main entrance to the venue featured a 17-meter-wide and 5-meter-high mesh arch, welcoming visitors into the world of Modern Odyssey. Inside the foyer, a Zeus shrine installation with a mesmerizing LED waterfall stood at 50 square meters and 4.5 meters high. Similar entrance treatments were created throughout the venue, each designed with meticulous attention to detail and adhering to the same specifications.

The flow of the installations followed a chronological order, guiding visitors through the theme of Modern Odyssey. Starting with the grand welcome of Zeus at the main foyer, the journey continued with installations representing Poseidon, Hera, Apollo, Artemis, and Athena at various entrance areas within the venue. This carefully curated progression allowed visitors to immerse themselves in the mythical world and experience the magic of ancient Greek mythology.

The Modern Odyssey project spanned three months, from the initial briefing to the onsite completion. The installations were located at the prestigious Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai, Hong Kong, and the event ran for five days, from February 28th to March 4th, 2019.

This exceptional design project was recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2020. The award celebrates designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skill, contributing to improvements in quality of life. Modern Odyssey truly transformed the 2019 Hong Kong International Jewellery Show, creating a captivating and unforgettable experience for visitors.
